The Summer Dance on 15 June 2006 was held at the Foreign Press Association, Carlton House Terrace near St. James’ Park in London and it raised over £8,000.
The dance was organised with the kind support of the Bulgarian Embassy, the Bulgarian City Club and ZOV UK. We would like to thank all those who helped with the organization, but particularly Prince Kyril, Don Robinson, Lucy Rosenstein from ZOV UK, Zarko Yankov and Alek Petrov from BCC, H.E. Ambassador Luchezar Matev and his wife, Valentin Borissov, Nivelin Tachchiev, and Radi Ulinska (the raffle queen). In our Projects section you can find details on the project we are funding with the proceeds of the party – two orphanages in Stara Zagora, the home for mentally disabled children in Petrovo (near Stara Zagora) and the “Dobro Sartze” Day Centre in Pernik.
11 Carlton Terrance, Gladstone and Bulgaria.
Carlton House Terrace was designed by John Nash and was built between 1827 and 1832 on the site of Carlton House, the former palace of the Prince Regent. It was home to the British Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, from 1857 until 1875, shortly before the events which led to his close connection with Bulgaria.
The bloody suppression of the April 1876 uprising in Bulgaria was a wake up call for Gladstone; he later claimed that the Bulgarian question was the main business of his life over the following four years. His famous pamphlet, the Bulgarian Horrors and the Question of the East was published in September 1876, and rapidly became a bestseller. Together with his great speech at Blackheath, the pamphlet was instrumental in winning British public support for the Bulgarian cause, and in preventing the British Empire from siding with the Turks during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877- 1878 which led to Bulgaria’s independence in 1879.
